This solitary, romantic castle stands on a rocky peninsular, set against wooded landscape. The lord-bishops of Clermont built the fortress in the 13th-century as a display of their authority over the Sanflorain. In its darkest hour, a band of brigands, led by Bernard de Garlan, seized the castle (1384-1391) and terrorised the region. The event is remembered every August in even-numbered years at the Dit d’Alleuze Sound and Light show, when the local folktale of The Wicked Hunchback of Alleuze, a child-eating monster, is recounted.
