Thanks to tanning and cloth manufacture, this town grew into one of the Rouergue’s major towns right up to the 19th-century. You can still see the swanky 18th-century mansions linking the two streets leading to the bridge. Key sites include: the Chapel of the Black Penitents (17th-century, painted wooden vault and alter-piece), Church of the White Penitents (14th-century chapel) and 12th-century church (double staircase and Baroque altar-pieces). Now, strawberries are St Geniez d’Olt’s pride and joy. Taste them in summer.
St Geniez is on the River Lot - an old name for which is 'Olt'.
