Whatever your interests, from cultural to gastronomic, active to lazy, the Lot Valley has something to offer. Come and see and enjoy. You will not be disappointed. You will be warmly welcomed with the joie de vivre for which southern France is famous.

This lush, rural retreat offers everything that’s good about France – fabulous but affordable food and wine, medieval, ‘bastide’ villages straight out of a Renault Clio advert, and a truly green country lifestyle where you can finally unwind.

Midi, because it’s way down south, and green because it’s not as suffocatingly hot as other places. And therefore just right if you like being active. You can experience the valley by canoe, on foot or cycling, watching the landscape change from vineyard hillsides to peaceful plateaux and dramatic cascading waterfalls (or you can stay put and just tease the fish). But wherever you go, the Lot River flows through, irrigating the land and making everything lush and green. You could almost be in Scotland – if it weren’t for the sunshine, the wine…and the French!

It's green, too, in the sense of valuing, protecting and enhancing the environment, whether the original mediaeval towns and villages or the wild, often empty and always magnificent countryside. There are parks where wolves, bison, wild boar and birds of prey are nurtured as well as protected, all in their natural surroundings. You’ll even find herds of cattle protected by a special “organic” and cruelty-free charter which guarantees them respect: the right to live a natural life, grazing in the open and abattoirs where the animals feel neither stress nor fear.

The Brit-flooded Dordogne / Périgord region is just next-door, but you can come to the Lot Valley to avoid the crowds and inflated tourist prices. Kids love the freedom and fairy-tale castles. Couples enjoy the privacy and romantic riverside strolls, while culture vultures can’t get enough of the history – enlivened by the Hundred Years War and Santiago de Compostela’s pilgrim trail. Natural spas bubble up at Chaudes-Aigues if you fancy a spa holiday.
