Every Pentecost (Whitsun) weekend, the Lozère goes horse-riding mad. Follow the guide along well-trodden trails, taste local specialities from hearty aligot to local cheeses and party every evening.

This festival of music, folkdance and feasting, is dedicated to chestnuts. Stalls and marquees go up outside the Mairie, leafy chestnut boughs decorate the stands and 20,000 visitors swell the 400-odd inhabitants. Try chestnut in all its forms – from chestnut flour swelled into fluffy bread (‘fouaces’) to chestnut jam, chestnut-flower honey, chestnut liqueur, chestnut marshmallows, chestnut brandy snaps, cured sausages made from pigs fed on chestnuts, chestnut pâtés and chestnut mousse
