Trout, carnivorous fish, carp, whitefish and migratory fish are there for the catching. In fact, there are 20 varieties of fish swimming around in the Lot, plus American crabs (which must be killed on the spot) and the odd turtle lurking in moist prairies (the latter are fiercely protected).
The biggest fish caught (and their proud fishers) get a mention in the local press. One record-beating carp caught in the Lot weighed in at 138kg and measured 123 cm.
Trout fish along the stretch from the source of the Lot in Lozère down to the confluence with the River Dourdou. Seek out the elusive wild trout in the Lot's tributaries in the Cévennes, Aubrac and Cantal.
Hunt predatory fish in the reservoirs behind the dams along the Lot and its major tributaries, beginning at Castelnau-Lassouts. The River Truyère's two major reservoirs – Grandval and Sarrans – host zander and perch. Black bass and catfish thrive in the Castelnau-Lassouts reservoir and near Villeneuve-sur-Lot.
Fish for migrators on the section spanning the Lot's confluence with the Garonne up to the Temple-sur-Lot dam. According to the season, you'll find shad, lampreys, sea trout, eels and the odd salmon.
Carp grow to astonishing proportions in the Castelnau-Lassouts reservoir in the Aveyron. The population of record-size carp (10-20kg) in the Lot reservoirs is one of the largest in France. The unwritten rule is to weigh the fish, photograph your trophy, then return it alive into the water.
Join in the trend for night fishing, when all you can see is the glimmer of moonlight on the rippling water's surface, and the sun-shy fish come up near the surface, ready for the catch. Or take your children for kids' fishing courses. Once they've got the basics, they'll be hooked.

The accommodation on the tranquil, vast and wooded Sarrans lake is novel - a floating gîte known as a Lacustra - which is cosy and comfortable, with floor to ceiling windows, and a sun terrace on top. If you love being surrounded by nature, have a spirit of adventure and don’t mind being somewhere different each night - this could be your sort of fishing holiday. You’ll enjoy the challenge of teasing pike, and will even at times take the helm of your Lacustra. The Sarrans lake (a dam on La Truyère River), is exceptionally well stocked with predator fish. It’s a fisherman’s paradise with zander, pike, perch and various other white fish. Your floating gîte (from which you can actually fish!) or one of the small fishing boats will get you to places you wouldn’t otherwise get to.
