The River Lot and its two main tributaries - the Truyère and Célé - account for nearly 500 miles of river. Add to these the 3000 plus hectares of upstream lakes, and it's no surprise that most outdoor activities focus on the river. Among the most popular in the Upper Lot Valley are canoeing and kayaking.

Criss-crossed with rivers and dotted with lakes, Aveyron is a healthy choice for canoeists, while the lofty Lozère, high up in the Massif Central, is crossed by spring waters that feed into the Garonne, Loire and Rhône. Choose from deep forest, vertiginous gorges carved into the rock face and wild causses as your backdrop, and calm or rapid waters.

On the Aveyron/Cantal borders at Vieillevie there's a large canoe/kayak base where adults and children (aged over 8 and who can swim) can learn to canoe or improve their skills. There are fully qualified local guides available to coach and accompany outings; these guides know every twist and turn of the river. A wide range of equipment is available for hire; and canoes too for hire by proficient canoeists who do not need to be accompanied. Depending on water levels and time of year, white water rafting can also be practised.
